Traffic jam predicted for mobile internet browsing…

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Information has been leaked that mobile internet operators need to act quick to prevent major traffic jams on their network in the future – this information has been produced by Mobile Analyst shop Informa!

More and more people are accessing the internet via their mobile phones, which is easy to understand when we are releasing handsets like the,  iphone, HTC HD etc etc, the list goes on. A mobile analyst at Informa said that mobile internet traffic is set to rise 25-fold by 2012. While this is a positive for mobile phone companies and operators, action will have to be taken to avoid an overload on the networks.  An overload would mean a network melt down and would  cause total mayhem in the mobile phone industry!

The main problem is that Telcos current revenues from data are increasing much slower thank traffic. We all know how important money saving is, so by adopting a flat-rate price they are increasing the traffic, but not making enough money to upgrade networks. – it makes sense.

Development work is being done on the hardware to build next-generation mobile networks, that will be able to handle the higher data rates, but this is not set to happen until late 2010!

We will have to see what happens, but lets hope we don’t start to experience a new type of traffic jam!

Police officers to be kitted-out with Smartphones

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

March 2010 will see the introduction of Smartphones to most of the UK’s police force according to the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA).  Thirty UK forces are already using the smartphones and have resulted in a range of benefits Gary Cairns of the NPIA reported.  Officers with smartphones spend 30 minutes less per shift in police stations, leaving them to spend more time out on the beat.  The phones also enable officers to access databases, such as the Police National Computer, and receive briefings that would normally only be available from within stations.  Since the introduction of the smartphones the time actually spent in police buildings has decreased from 46% to 36% said Jim Hitch of Bedfordshire Police.

Smartphones really are changing the way we all live; from keeping in touch on the go via email to doing your weekly online grocery shop now to helping the police improve efficiency, whatever next…

iPhone expected to be range on the UK network ‘3’

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Kevin Russell the 3 UK chief is expecting to range the iPhone next year along a much wider range of smartphones, offering to seal 3’s identity as the ‘data network’.

This is big news for 3 which current stock a smaller variety of mobile phones, 3 will boost their smartphone offering next year and this includes the iPhone. This new handset range that will be added to their portfolio will help position 3 as the data network of choice, chief executive Kevin Russell said last week.

Last week Russell spoke at the Westminster eForum in London titled ‘More than talk…the future of mobile’, he said he expected 3 UK would range the iPhone next year’. The new strategy is all being smart, they will range a large amount of smartphones and look at taking their brand into a new era.

Russell said: Said Russell: “We are a data network. Ninety-three per cent of the traffic on our network comes from data. I would expect the iPhone to be on the 3 network sometime during 2010.

“At the moment, we don’t have the iPhone. We don’t really have any smartphones but if we improve our range of smartphones and introduce the iPhone then our data traffic will grow massively. Our take up of web services is already massive.”

Russell was asked why 3 had missed out on the iPhone distribution, following recent announcements by Orange and Vodafone, he said ‘it was a matter of building the business on its own merit and not because of one draw card.’

3 don’t have the iPhone now because of their own strategy, they don’t want to jump on something because everyone else is, they want to create the right strategy that will work for them and boost sales.  The main reason 3 haven’t dealt in smartphones is because they were concentrating on the mass market. They wanted to push thousands of customers into the mobile internet era as quickly as possible. But times have now changed and so too are 3, over the next year we will see a big change from 3, a new range, a new strategy and a brand.

80% of Blackberrys now sold to consumers!

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Research In Motion (RIM), who make Blackberrys, reported 80% of new customers in Q2 of its financial year were consumers.  This is clearly in line with their strategy to increase penetration into the consumer market.  Their pitch will continue to be at both consumers and business consumers with the launch of the Storm2, exclusive to Vodafone from October 26th 2009.

RIM believe it’s all about giving the customer choice – their aim is to have a range of different devices in the market to attract different segments.

Windows 7 hits the shops and online sites!

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Microsoft Windows 7 hit the market both online and in the shop on Thursday 23rd October! This is Microsofts most important release in more than a decade and is aiming to win back all those disappointed customers who brought Vista.

Microsoft aims to strengthen their grip on the PC, laptop and netbook market and are putting up a good fight! The launch of Windows 7 will help the world’s largest software company to expand further.

‘Microsoft powers a staggering 90 percent of personal computers’

Top reviews have been received for Windows 7, which is great for Microsoft – Windows 7 is being describe as  ‘a polishing release of Windows Vista’.  Microsoft’s rivals include Apple Inc and Google Inc, will be watching this new product very closely and I’m sure looking at new ways to improve their own software.

So what’s new? It’s faster, less cluttered and has a brand new touchscreen feature, it arrives on our shelves 3 years after the massive launch of Vista! Vista caused a lot of frustration for many home users and pushed business customers way. Microsoft knew they had to bring out something big, and a big thing they have, the improvements from Vista to Windows 7 is pretty impressive.

When you first start up Windows 7, it doesn’t look or sound all that different to its big brother Vista, but once running the changes are noticeable:

  • The desktop widgets/Gadgets can be place wherever you like on your desktop
  • Small previews appear when you hover over the internet explorer bar, which allows you to see what’s running, even if you’re running live video at the time
  • Each computer that runs Windows 7 can dictate what kinds of files will be shared i.e. documents, videos or even music – all of which will remain private to you
  • ‘Play To’ means you can play multimedia out to other computer in the network, or how about this even to an Xbox
  • Search has been updated, the search results can now be broken down into smaller ‘sub-lists‘by type i.e. programs, documents, multimedia etc
  • ‘Snap to compare’ allows you to compare two files side-by-side with a very quick drag and drop function

Windows 7 is a chance for us all to get more out of our PCs, laptops and netbooks, with a faster speed but a simpler function. Businesses will pick up on this point, it is essential for all businesses to work fast and to function quickly – with Microsoft 7 it’s possible!

The new software features in a range of laptops including the, Toshiba L350, Sony NW20, Asus X5DC, Samsung X120 and many more. Microsoft is not just for laptops or PCs, you can get a smaller version for portable netbooks and it’s available for large touchscreen computers! All areas of the market are covered! There will also be a range of offers in conjunction with Best Buy Co Inc, Dell Inc and Acer inc!
