HTC Hero wins T3s ‘Gadget of the Year’ accolade…

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Gadget people T3 have awarded the HTC Hero ‘Gadget of the Year’.  Johnny Vaughan hosted the awards evening and announced the winners as voted by a panel of judges as well as readers of T3.

T3 Gadgets

Here’s what T3 have to say about the HTC Hero:

HTC, Google and the legions of people who would rather not buy an Apple at last have something to shout about. The Hero is a full featured, wonderfully usable, beautifully presented handset with a similarly lovely open source OS. Available in a range of handsome colours including controversial pink and modish brown, the Hero contrives to be both serious and businesslike, yet devilishly cool. With HTC’s massively customisable Sense skin over Google’s Android OS it allows you to make it exactly the phone you need. The responsive, 3.2-inch touchscreen and ever-widening range of apps do the rest.

Telecoms regulator Ofcom to allow emergency roaming:

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Previously not the case, mobile phone users will now be able to call the emergency service numbers 999 and 112 from another network if their own network is unavailable in the area they are calling from.  The regulator is also looking into text services for disabled users of mobile phones.

The move is the result of a joint effort between Ofcom, the mobile networks, emergency authorities and the fixed networks who act as call handling agents.

An amazing two thirds of Brits like to be connected to technology at all times!

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

How times have changed – a new study commissioned by Virgin Media has found two thirds of Britons like to be connected to technology at all times and a third experience anxiety when they’re not connected!

People are now using technology to help them relax and are more relaxed when they’re connected than not.  These people have been given a nickname – SOSOs, people who Switch On to Switch Off.

1000 people between the ages of 18 and 65 were surveyed – over 35% feel anxious if they are not able to use technology to stay in touch with their family.  People are also reliant on using technology to provide advice, from online maps 25%, dating 21% or shopping around 15%.  Being connected is increasingly becoming essential for peoples peace of mind.

The study also pointed out that children are adopting SOSO behaviour much faster than their parents and said that technology will be intrinsic to the lives of future generations.  The researchers concluded – ‘The idea of switching off and not being able to connect to others at an instant will not only be foreign to them, but seem counter-productive to society’.

Phone hackers strike again!

Friday, October 16th, 2009

News was leaked a few months ago that a News of the World reporter was hacking into rich and famous peeps mobile phones! A senior Metropolitan Police officer had said ‘There is now evidence that Prince Harry and William have had their phones hacked into by a News of the World reporter”.

Back in 2007 royal reporter Clive Goodman was jailed for four months for plotting to hack into the royal aides voicemails. The Commons Culture Committee was informed that the princes may also have been personally targeted.

A News of the World spokesman said ‘ The police had not brought up allegations during their original investigation’.

It seems there is a tennis match between the police and the News of the World, both sides are pushing what they said is the truth. We don’t expect News of the World to admit to something so ’shocking’, but then again proof is needed. The police were never able to prove that the princes had had their phones hacked into!

This is not a one of, older stories exist of phone ‘hacking’ of the rich and famous.  Newspapers have revealed that the head of the Professional Footballers’ Association, Gordon Taylor, had received £700,000 in damages and court costs last year in a case against the News of the World, but on condition that details of the case were not made public.

The rich and famous are already hounded by the press, but this ‘hacking’ takes things a step too far, let’s hope we don’t hear about anymore ‘hacking’ allegations.
