Sat Nav on your Nokia. For free. Forever.

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Nokia hits TomTom, Garmin with a free sat-nav on selected mobile phones in a bid to boost sales and prices – the competitions on!

This was a massive blow for sat-nav businesses whose $25 billion market has already been hit by Google! Nokia are following the steps of Google, by offering a free navigation package on over 20 million smartphones!

Share have started a big decline for for satnav market leaders Dutch TomTom and U.S. Garmin sunk, they fell 11% and Garmin fell by 4.2% after this news!

Nokia are offering  free unlimited Sat-Nav with drive and walk navigation on selected Nokia phones – not just to new customers to existing customers. There are a select few mobile phones this is being ranged on to start with, the Nokia N97 Mini, the Nokia E72, the Nokia 5800 and the Nokia 5230 – but this number will soon grow.

Thilo Koslowski said Gartner analyst ”It’s a major shock for the navigation industry. Going forward profit margins have to come down,”

This is an impressive move from a company that sell more smartphones than any of their rivals, but since the Apple’s iPhone and BlackBerry’s RIM, Nokia have lost ground.

What happens next will be interesting, who will take the next bold move.

iPad was revealed after months of rumours and speculation

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Apple put an end to months and months of rumours of guessing and speculation by unveiling the new tablet device at an event in San Francisco. The device has been named ‘the iPad’.
ipad2Apple’s chief executive, Steve Jobs, described the tablet, which is priced between $499 and $829 in the US, as a “third category” between smartphones and laptops.

The iPad which looks like a large iPhone, can be used to watch films, look through photos, browse the web and much more.

Apple have done a deal with publishers including Penguin, Macmillan and Harper Collins to allow e-books to be downloaded directly to the device through a new iBook Store.

“You can download right onto your iPad,” said Mr Jobs.

Magazines and newspapers on the device were shown at the event.

Most Children Under 10 Own a Mobile Phone

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Sky News announced that nearly two thirds of children under the age of 10 have mobile phones, even though the official advice for the age of mobile phones restricts under-16’s using mobile phones.

According to a survey done, parents are increasingly giving mobile phones to their children. The survey showed that 63% of parents gave their children mobile phones to give into their nagging. Another reason was safety, parents can contact their children all the time if they have a mobile phone and if children get into any danger they can ring their parents.

There’s a large amount of Samsung phones that come with safety features, including:
SOS calling
Mobile tracker

All of which help keep children safe, even though there is an argument to say mobile phones are the cause of some bullying in the playground.

It’s doesn’t stop there, children want and have the latest laptops, games consoles and even MP3 players.  Of the parents who refused to give into their children, a large percent said it wasn’t necessary and a smaller percentage said due to health reasons they wouldn’t buy them.

Mobile phones are taking over, they are becoming more and more popular and more of a necessity than an accessory. With this in mind scientist conducted some experience to see how damaging the Radiofrequency (RF) emissions are. Although results show very low exposure, they still issue a health warning to young children. Scientist argue that mobile phones have been around for only 20 years and there is no way to prove the long-term consequences – if there is any.

The Illuvial range has seen a good trade in the run up to Christmas.

Illuvial

Back in November last year (2009) the Nokia Illuvial collection was release, these were a select few Nokia phones that already existed. Including the Nokia 5530, the 6303 and the 6700 – all these phones got ‘Illuvialled up’! The Nokia Illuvial Pink Collection featured a unique design with pink graphics on a white or black background, and they were designed to make a fashionable alternative to some of Nokia’s most popular handsets.

All these phones sold well on the run up to Christmas, according to the Carphone chief commercial officer Graham Stapleton.

He has also said the 5530 was in CPW’s top five and commented on the fact that more games consoles in the fourth quart of 2009 were sold than in any other.

Stapleton said: “Games and console sales as part of gifting deals did exceptionally well during the run up to Christmas. We aim to remain a top retailer for products other than traditional mobile devices and we will continue to focus on such products in the future.”

Overall CPW had a great Christmas, they compared 2009 with 2008 and were happy to announce a strong increase in both contract and pay-as-you-go sales.
