The Influence of Applications!

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

TNS Telecoms Insight have done some research to show that a third of all mobile phone users quizzed ‘see content’ and ‘applications’ as a major factor for influencing their choice of mobile phone!

A massive one third of mobile phone users see applications as a major influence when purchasing a mobile phone, according to TNS latest Global Telecoms Insight study.

What happened and what did they find out?
The TNS study showed after quizzing 27,000 consumers, 33% saw the content and applications, such as maps, music and games, as a major factor in deciding which mobile they should buy.

They also found that 13% of consumers considered content and applications to be the single most important handset purchase consideration. While only a small 9% picked their phone due to the model of the phone and 12% make their choice based on the network.

Stephen Yap the TNS Technology group director said: “As uptake and usage of mobile services proliferates, we are seeing profound changes in the way that people make purchase decisions and in the brands that are the most meaningful to them.

“While established handset makers are standing their ground, network operators are clearly under pressure from the rise of the likes of Facebook, Google and Twitter. These content providers are increasingly capturing consumers’ loyalties and are leading the way in brining users the benefits of the latest mobile technologies.”

2010 The Year of the 3D!

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

Each year brings a new era of technology, 2009 brought us the minimising of gadgets. The PS3 and Nokia N97 become the Sony PS3 Slim and the Nokia N97 mini. Laptops become netbooks and Apple pushed the iPhone, which one could call a mini laptop. The list goes on, but let’s looks at the present day, the era of 3D has begun!

The latest film to hit the cinema screens is the hugely popular Avatar, which was available to view in 3D! 3D is appearing more and more in cinema screens around the world, there was even a 3D football match with Man United Vs Arsenal on the 31st of January, I have been informed Man United won 3-0. Enough about football and back to 3D, so we’ve gone from the cinema screen, to the pub screen, well know it’s the coming to your home screen!

The Panasonic TC-P50VT25
This Panasonic masterpiece is full HD, 50 inch, 3D plasma comes with sc-fi style glasses packaged in every box! The price is yet to be confirmed, but you can bet your looking at the same price as a HD TV cost when they first came out. The glasses are slightly bulky and could do with a little slim-line design work, but I’m sure they will do the trick – no one will see you in your front room.

The question is when will 3D come to your mobile phone…

Peratech to introduce exciting new touchscreen technology

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

The mobile phones which are getting the most attention and hype on the market at the moment are without a doubt – touchscreen phones.

Many different types of touchscreen technology have been introduced during this boom, including – capacitive, resistive, haptics feedback and even the ability to select more than one point of focus with Multi-Touch.  So what is next for this rapidly expanding, successful area of the mobile phone market.  Peratech Researchers, based in the UK, have utilised quantum tunnelling technology to develop a new form of touchscreen.  Let’s not concentrate so much on the science of things, more importantly let’s look into what this technology will allow phones to do!

Peratech’s new technology will introduce Pressure-sensitive touchscreens which will be able to gauge the difference between the slightest of touch and a firm poke!  This opens up an entirely new user experience, with results and gestures based on type or amount of pressure applied.  Other benefits include developments to existing multi-touch functionality – such as the ability to drag and zoom pictures simultaneously, variable scroll speeds and even better battery life conservation.

The Japanese display manufacturer Nissha, famed for their screens produced for LG and Nintendo amongst others have already secured a contract with Peratech.  The first gadgets and products to utilise this exciting pressure-sensitive touchscreen technology should be hitting shelves around April 2010
